Steps to tame your emotional triggers

Identify your triggers. The first step is to become aware of the things that tend to set you off. What are the situations, people, or events that seem to bring out the worst in you .

Challenge your negative thoughts. When you're triggered, your mind may start racing with negative thoughts. These thoughts can make the situation seem even worse than it really is.

Take a time-out. If you feel yourself starting to get triggered, take a time-out. Remove yourself from the situation and go to a place where you can calm down.

Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. When you're mindful, you're less likely to get caught up in your thoughts and emotions.

Build your self-esteem. People with low self-esteem are more likely to be triggered by criticism or rejection. Work on building your self-esteem by focusing on your strengths and accomplishments.

Seek professional help. If you're struggling to manage your emotional triggers on your own, seek professional help.
